Winter Ale Beanie
free knitting pattern
This hat pattern is perfect for a beginner, as it uses bulky yarn and only knits and purls.
Constructed of 1x2 ribbing, and reversed on the brim for continuity when worn, this hat is designed to emphasize vertical lines. The choice of a speckled yarn adds visual interest while the choice of ribbing prevents the speckles from muddling intentional striation.

instructions
Cast on:
Using circular needles, cast on 48 stitches loosely. Insert a stitch marker to mark the start of the round.
Work the brim:
[K2 P1] every row until the brim is the desired height.
Approximately 10 rows or more.
[K] across 1 row.
Work the body:
[P2 K1] every row until the hat is the desired height.
Approximately 28 rows. Note that we will decrease across 2 rows but it will not add any additional height to the hat.
Finish:
Switch to double-pointed needles.
[P2tog, K] across 1 row.
[K2tog] across 1 row.
This creates a right-leaning decrease that continues the ribbing.
Thread the remaining yarn through the open stitches and pull tight.
Weave in ends and block.
